Fanfares explores the next level, enabling a move towards something that is more akin to ordinary commerce in the physical world. The basic proposition is simple: 'you pay for something, then you get it'

The dominant internet business model asks users to pay with their data. Platforms, algorithms and advertisers then gain enormous influence over what people see and how they behave. Subscriptions are often presented as the alternative, but they are largely a consequence of transaction friction. When every individual transaction requires identity, payment details and administrative overhead, it becomes cheaper for merchants to bundle content and easier for users to enter into an ongoing commitment.

Bitcoin Lightning changes that equation. It enables instant, low-cost payments without requiring identity. Nostr enables content distribution without a central platform and without requiring users to identify themselves.

Fanfares combines these capabilities to create a simple model of digital commerce: pay, receive, and have ownership. It can provide access to content only to those who have paid, while also creating incentives for people to discover, recommend and promote valuable content. Bitcoin Lightning payment splits allow revenue to be distributed automatically among the people who contributed to the creation, distribution and promotion of that content.
