What can the history of banking teach us about Bitcoin?
2026-11-21 –, Pendulum - Main Stage

The talk offers a brief overview on the nature and history of deposit banking. It, then, draws some lessons with regards to Bitcoin.

Project:

The talk is based on research that was done as part of the Deciphering Bitcoin Project.

The primary aim of the project is to produce a textbook about the nature and value of Bitcoin within the context of our traditional practices regarding to money, payments, and banking. You can see the state of the book in the Github repository: https://github.com/JWBurgers/deciphering-bitcoin.

Two courses have also been developed as part of the project, one for general audiences (two days) and one for technical audiences (five days).

I am a partner in an investment group and writing an academic textbook about Bitcoin. The latter project I started in 2024. My work experience is a bit ecclectic. I have worked as an academic philosopher, an IT consultant, an English teacher, a writer, an editor, and a professional investor. Since 2016, I have worked mostly in the Bitcoin space.

My first presentation about Bitcoin was in 2014 at the Dutch Central Bank of all places.
