Fiat is dead, long live fiat
2026-11-21 –, Pendulum - Main Stage

Living in a fiat world, stacking for a bitcoin one.

You interrogate the money, the banks, the state - but when did you last interrogate yourself? Twenty minutes on the fiat systems you refuse to touch, the risks you've stopped noticing, and a stack of sats you never have to sell. Bring your convictions. See which ones survive.

Most bitcoin talks are about why fiat is ending. Mine is about the awkward bit - how to live well while it breaks. We're all still paid, taxed and spending in a system we've mentally opted out of, and most bitcoiners have stopped thinking about how to use it well.

It's a practical, gently provocative talk built around one simple device: following £1,000 down three different paths - spot bitcoin, and the mainstream wrappers like ISAs and pensions that most of this audience dismisses on principle - to show what each really costs and pays on the way in, while held, and on the way out. Simple, high-level numbers, nothing data-heavy. From there it widens into the risks bitcoiners don't like discussing (including the ones in self-custody itself) and closes on the argument that diversification isn't betrayal - it's how you protect a stack you never want to sell.

The aim is to challenge assumptions, not give guidance: I'm a qualified accountant and bitcoiner, and the talk is strictly education and trade-offs, not financial advice. Expect a few laughs at our own tribe's expense and a room full of people arguing with me in their heads. For most, their approach won't change - but it'll be a decision rather than a default, and they'll understand the system they're living in a little better. A few may genuinely reconsider how bitcoin fits into their wider financial life. The talk runs a tight twenty minutes and doesn't need a Q&A slot.
