Protecting your smartphone and building a private and secure mobile OS
2026-11-21 –, Cotton Theatre - Freedom Stage

Smartphones are the most widely used personal computing platform designed for communication, entertainment, navigation, and managing our finances and digital identities. As smartphones increasingly integrate into our daily lives, they come to store and process vast amounts of sensitive personal data. For some of these users, the security and privacy protections offered by mainstream mobile operating systems are not enough. Protecting this data therefore requires more than securing individual applications; it requires a hardened operating system with strong security and privacy guarantees.

A guided talk and workshop on mobile security covering a broad range of threat models and devices, including a showcase of GrapheneOS.

This talk will cover:

  • Current and historic threats of mobile security and privacy including the use of mobile hacking tools in social and human rights injustices.

  • Discussion on how to better protect your smartphone, communications, hot wallets etc.

  • GrapheneOS, a highly private and secure mobile operating system with Android app compatibility for certain device models.

You may be interested in the talk if you are an (aspiring) adopter of freedom tech, privacy or a follower of the GrapheneOS project.
